It’s Alive!
Sucking in the ink from the bottom of the cartridges worked well.
I was worried about the ink ribbon running especially when printing 13 inch wide paper so I set it up like shown in the pictures:
1) I cut the opening shroud wider using a soldering iron which leaves no residue.
2) I cut the cartridge carriage’s left side down lower to let the ribbon stay below the bridge of the control panel.
3) I affixed a little ribbon keeper to the ribbons and taped it to the left side of the carriage to make sure the ribbons don’t get caught on the bridge.
4) I used a bendy wire keeper thing to keep the ribbon high but with some flexibility so the cartridge carrier could go full left and full right without anything getting jammed up.
And, amazingly, it works!
I’ve got to redo everything to make it more substantial, but this approach works.
The quality is just as good as my Artisan’s and that’s high praise. I’m using the Costco Kirkland photo paper.
I’ll get you some better pictures after I clean it up and reinforce everything.
So this is where I ended up from a year long effort to upgrade my Artisans! Whew!
Thanks for all your help!

What Jim demostrated above is just for reference. The tubing and routing can be much easier. See the setup pictures from other customers and installation manual.
